What is a Plumber?
Plumbers work in the Construction Industry, installing and repairing plumbing systems and all devices that use water. Plumbers use all kinds of tools and equipment to complete a wide variety of jobs including the installation of sinks, toilets, heating and cooling systems, water tanks, dishwashers, hot waters systems etc. Plumbers may also hold a gas fitters licence enabling them to install and maintain gas systems in domestic, commercial and industrial premises.
Examples of tasks and duties:
- Read plans and specifications
- Maintain knowledge of local plumbing regulations
- Find and mark position for connections
- Assemble and install pipes, valves and fittings, join pipe sections and secure pipes
- Install sinks and dishwashers
- Install drainage and pipe work to a wide range of domestic, commercial and industrial properties
- Install, service, repair and replace hot water systems
- Unblock and repair sewerage systems
- Install gas systems if licenced to do so
- Clean, repair and install down pipes and water tanks
How do I get into this trade?
Solid results in Year 10 English and Maths are essential to be considered for a school-based apprenticeship in Plumbing. In addition, individuals focused on entering this trade will undertake a pre-apprenticeship Certificate II in Plumbing. Post-school, it is recommended you complete the pre-apprenticeship course if you have no experience in this area.

Completing a Plumbing Apprenticeship can lead to a career as a Plumber, a Plumber and Drainer or a Gasfitter. Further studies may also lead you to a career as a Waste Water and Environmental Planner – Hydraulics Services.
