Financial Support for Australian Apprentices

As an Australian Apprentice, you may be eligible for financial assistance from the Australian Government to help with cost-of-living expenses and to assist you in your Apprenticeship journey.

From the 1st of July 2024, the Federal Government has streamlined the incentive program to allocate more support to industries that are considered a priority to building the Australian economy, and also to support more Australian Apprentices to enter into the Clean Energy Sector.

Priority occupations are those listed on the Australian Apprenticeships Priority List.

Australian Apprentice Training Support Payment

Australian Apprentices training in priority occupations can receive assistance of up to $5,000 to ensure they are supported to complete their training.
  • Full Time Australian Apprentice - $1,750 payable at 6 months and 12 months.
  • Full Time Australian Apprentice - $750 payable at 18 months and 24 months.
  • Part Time Australian Apprentice - $875 payable at 6 months and 12 months.
  • Part Time Australian Apprentice - $375 payable at 18 months and 24 months.
Claims will appear in ADMS when they become due at the 6, 12, 18 & 24 month mark and Australian Apprentices will have 12 calendar months to submit their claim forms via ADMS.
As the Australian Apprentice Training Support Payment is considered a taxable income, failure to provide a Tax File Number PDF Summary to Mas National prior to submitting a claim form in ADMS will result in the above payments being taxed at the maximum rate of 47%. The TFN PDF Summary must state the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations’ as the employer.
To be eligible for the Australian Apprentice Training Support Payment, an Australian Apprentice must:
  • Be an Australian citizen; or a foreign national with permanent residency; or a New Zealand passport holder with at least six months’ residence in Australia; and
  • Be commencing or recommencing a Certificate III or IV, or a Diploma or Advanced Diploma from the Australian Apprenticeships Priority List; and
  • Not be receiving the New Energy Apprentice Support Payment; and
Where the Employer is:
  • Registered for Single Touch Payroll with the ATO or has ATO Exemption, and therefore wage evidence is available through Single Touch Payroll.
To claim this payment, the Australian Apprentice must access the ADMS System to lodge the claim within 12 months of the effect date.

New Energy Apprentice Support Payment

The New Energy Apprentice Support Payment is designed to encourage Australian Apprentices to choose a career in the Clean Energy sector, improve retention rates and deliver successful completions.
Australian Apprentices training in priority occupations identified as Clean Energy can receive assistance of up to $10,000 to ensure they are supported to complete their training.
  • Full Time Australian Apprentice - $2,000 payable at 6 months, 12 months, 24 months, 36 months and at completion of the program.
  • Part Time Australian Apprentice - $1,000 payable at 6 months, 12 months, 24 months, 36 months and at completion of the program.
Employment that undertakes activities principally motivated by the production of renewable energy, and/or by the design, construction and/or operation and maintenance of renewable energy infrastructure.
Apprentices who sign up from 1 June 2024 will be eligible for the New Energy Apprenticeship Program if their employer can demonstrate that they will undertake clean energy work and can provide meaningful exposure, experience, and work for apprentices in clean energy. Apprentices working in organisations who are transitioning to clean energy activities will be eligible to participate and apprentices employed by GTOs (Group Training Organisations) who meet the revised definition will also be eligible to apply. For an Australian Apprentice to be eligible for the New Energy Apprentice Support Payment they must:
  • Fulfill all primary eligibility requirements; and
  • At the date of commencement or recommencement with a new employer, the Australian Apprentice must be undertaking a clean energy qualification on the Australian Apprenticeships Priority List, at the levels ranging from Certificate III to Advanced Diploma; and
  • The Australian Apprenticeship must be in a clean energy occupation as listed on the Australian Apprenticeships Priority List; and
  • Employers must demonstrate business engagement and operations in clean energy and ensure the Austalian Apprentice gains relevant exposure and experience in this field. Group Training Organisations can also participate by providing similar opportunities; and
  • Both the Australian Apprentice and employer must sign declarations committing to participate in two onsite workplace checks by their Provider and to focus on developing skills in the clean energy sector; and
  • The Australian Apprentice must still be in-training with their employer on the claim period end date; and
Where the employer is:
  • Registered for Single Touch Payroll with the ATO or has ATO Exemption, and therefore wage evidence is available through Single Touch Payroll.
