What is a Painter & Decorator?

Painters and decorators work in the Construction Industry on a wide variety of jobs ranging from preparing new homes for painting to doing full renovation repaints. In addition, Painters and Decorators also varnish interior and exterior surfaces, hang wallpaper and apply decorative finishes to interior and exterior surfaces. A Painter and Decorator is responsible for matching and co-ordinating the colours both inside and out.

Examples of tasks and duties:

  • Colour matching
  • Calculate, order and manage project materials
  • Use rollers, brushes and spray apparatus to apply paint to different surfaces
  • Apply different base and top coats for varying textures and effects
  • Preparing walls and ceilings for painting
  • Applying wall papers and other surface finishing techniques

How do I get into this trade?

To complete a Painting and Decorating Apprenticeship, you would have needed to graduate Year 10 with good results in English and Maths. A Painting and Decorating Pre-Apprenticeship would also be highly recommended if you have no previous work experience. You may also be able to start this apprenticeship while still attending school.

What does your career prospect look like?

Completing your Painting and Decorating Apprenticeship will have enabled you to develop skills and knowledge within the Construction Industry which could see you become self-employed and build a team of your own.
